Google Rankings and Nofollow Anchor Text

There was pool conducted in a private Facebook group where people voted that nofollow link can help rank a site because of the anchor text. What do you think? Can nofollow anchor text help ranking?

If you don’t know about that read this article.

Anchor Text Without Links

There are two theories hanging around about how nofollow link help a site rank.

The first theory says that a nofollow link will get republished by a spammer and that spammer may make it a dofollow link.

That’s correct. But due to that anyone assumes that a few spam links make a meaningful impact on rankings.

No, absolutely no. a few spam links will not help a site rank.

Second theory propose that search engines pick up the anchor text and use it for ranking. There are many problems with that guess about what Google does.

Let me make it clear for you, that this theory is totally a guess. There is nothing that support that guess.

  • There is no research
  • There are no patents
  • There are no statements from Google that anchor text from nofollow links are used. Absolutely nothing like that.

This theory is totally assumed and have no link with the reality. This theory is like the idea that moon is made out of the cheese.

So, there is nothing that shows nofollow anchors are being a ranking factor. Zero.

Links and the Link Graph

The link graph is the map of the internet.  The nofollow links are dropped from the link graph. The nofollow links removes the link from existence. It does not exist for Google.

John Meuller states this on record back in 2012:

We take these links out of our PageRank calculations, and out of our algorithms when they use links.”

No Follow Anchor Text are Just Words

Google takes it out of the page rank calculations. Because the link that anchor points to does not exist for Google, due to that reason anchor text becomes just words, only words nothing more than that.

Words are Not Links

Nofollow anchor text are like “Read More” and “Click Here” become words when Google removes the link from them. They are no longer anchor text. They become just words that are disconnected from any site since there no link associated with them.

Setting aside that there are no proves and no written documentation about using nofollow anchor text for ranking. The whole idea of using words (without links) as anchor text does not make any sense.

Even Google made a video for explaining the fact that nofollow link do not help rank a site in any way.

So, the idea that nofollow anchor text can influence rankings makes zero sense in three different ways. It’s like you believe in fairy tales any way.
